Breast Lumps

Breast Lump is a solid mass felt by your fingers in the soft tissue of your breast. It is mostly detected during breast self examination which is advised to all women. Breast Lump can be benign or cancerous. No breast lump should be ignored. The moment a breast lump is felt, you should consult a breast specialist. Fibroadenomas are solid, smooth, firm, non-cancerous (benign) lumps that are most commonly found in women in their 20s and 30s. They are the most common benign lumps in women and can occur at any age.

A cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops in the breast tissue. They most often happen in women between the ages of 35 and 50 and are common in those nearing menopause. The cysts often enlarge and become sore just before your period. Cysts can feel either soft or hard. When close to the surface of the breast, cysts can feel like a large blister, smooth on the outside, but fluid-filled on the inside. When they are deep in breast tissue, cysts will feel like hard lumps because they are covered with tissue.

The line of treatment for the breast lump would depend upon the nature of the lump which could be ascertained through investigations like, MR Mammography, Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) or a Trucut Biopsy. In case the breast lump is benign or non cancerous then the breast specialist at CLAGS Centre, Mohali in India would advise you to get the lump removed by the surgery called lumpectomy.

In case of breast cyst, your doctor may advise you to undergo FNAC test. Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a test in which a very thin needle is inserted into the cyst and fluid is drained out. This fluid is then sent to the laboratory to be checked for any cancerous cells under a microscope. Once all the fluid is drained out from the cyst, it collapses. This test also serves as the treatment for benign breast cyst and no further treatment may be required.
