Laparoscope is a surgical assistance tool in which a thin rod like structure has a powerful LED light at its tip. There is a also a very high resolution camera near the LED Light. During the surgery a small incision is made in the abdomen from which this thin rod is inserted inside the abdomen. The LED light illuminates the inside of the abdomen and the camera sends crystal clear images from the inside which are seen on the TV screen. These magnified images helps the surgeon in doing precision surgery. A second rod which contains surgical instruments is inserted through the second small incision on the abdomen. Instead of looking at the organ which is being operated, the surgeon looks at the TV screen and manouvres the surgical instruments. The surgeons have to undergo special training in operating a laparoscope. Not all general surgeons are well trained in Laparoscopy surgeries. Gynecology has three major branches - obstetrics which deals with child birth, gynecology which deals with the treatment of gynae diseases and infertility treatment. Most of the gynecologists who deal with gynae diseases are trained in open surgeries. Very few gynecologists undergo laparoscopy training. Due to this reason many of the gynae laparoscopic surgeries are being done by general surgeons in India.
Laparoscopic surgery can be used to treat a variety of gynecologic conditions that previously required large incisions, including endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, sterilization, pelvic problems such as urinary incontinence and pelvic support problems such as uterine prolapse. It can also be used for a variety of procedures, including a laparoscopic hysterectomy and a laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy.
The gynae surgeries which can be done laparoscopically are :
Lap Assisted Vaginal Hystrectomy (LAVH) - Removal of Uterus
Lap Myomectomy - Removal of Uterine Fibroids
Lap Ectopic Pregnancy - Removal of foetus from the fallopian tubes
Lap Tubectomy - For sterlization
Lap Ovarian Cystectomy - Removal of Cyst from the ovaries
Benefits of laparoscopic gynecological surgery can include less pain compared to open abdominal surgery, fewer complications, less scarring, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. There is much less blood loss in laparoscopic surgery as compared to open surgery. The hospital stay is much shorter and most of the patients go home on the same day or the next day of the surgery.
Healthcare Costs in India are already lower as compared to other western countries. Our Gynec Surgeons are trained in doing Laparoscopic surgeries and have performed more than 2500 Lap Surgeries in the last 15 years with excellent outcomes.
The cost of Lap Assisted Vaginal Hystrectomy is USD 2500 in India at CLAGS Mohali. The cost of other Lap Gynae Surgeries are in the range of USD 1500 - 2500. Lap Tubectomy costs only USD 1000 and is done as a day care procedure. The hospital stay for most of the surgeries is 1-2 days and we use dissolvable stitches. In any case there is just one stitch per hole in laparoscopic surgery. A maximum of 3 holes might be required in Lap Surgery. A total of 3-4 stiches are required after Lap Surgery. The patient is able to walk normally and perform routine functions without much discomfort after Lap Surgery. Rest is advised for a week for major Lap Surgeries. One can resume normal duties within 2 weeks of Lap Gynae Surgery.
